An Artistic Vision by

Anahita Khalilian has always harboured a deep passion for art in its many forms, with a particular affection for shoes. Over the years, she has curated a striking collection of high heels in bold colours and daring designs. Each pair was chosen not for practicality but for their visual appeal. Ironically, due to a neurogenic disease called spinal muscular atrophy, which confines her to a wheelchair, she has no practical use for these shoes. The stares from strangers are an expected consequence of being exceptional.
This photographic series was developed in collaboration with Riley Stewart, a photographer Anahita approached to help realize her artistic vision. Riley and Anahita first met in Montreal during a French language course, where a shared interest in creativity sparked a lasting friendship. From the beginning, Riley connected deeply with Anahita's vision and the message behind her art. They worked together to brainstorm how best to visually convey her narrative, blending his keen eye for composition with her personal story. Riley's photography not only brought Anahita's ideas to life but also infused them with layers of meaning she had not initially anticipated.
The concept for this series stems from Anahita's desire to shift perceptions of individuals with physical limitations. Having often felt unseen due to her wheelchair drawing attention, she uses fashion to redirect the focus back to her as a person. Each pair of shoes represents a chapter of her story, reflecting her unique style and the freedom of not worrying about wear and tear. Despite never having walked in them, these shoes symbolize significant milestones in her life, capturing both her love for fashion and her personal growth.
Encouraged by her late father to cherish each pair of shoes she collected, Anahita's collection has come to symbolize not just her passion but also her journey of resilience and expression. With Riley's belief in the project and his insightful photography, they captured moments of hardship, pride, and triumph. Their partnership was crucial in bringing this narrative to life.
While Anahita's vision sparked the project, Riley's contributions in shaping and interpreting the story elevated it to new heights, illustrating a life lived fully despite the obstacles.
